Nordea Riga Marathon 2010 Results and New Records
On 23 May, 11,457 participants from 45 countries lined up on the starting line of the Nordea Riga Marathon for five different races spanning various distances. In total, more than 10,000 runners finished the Nordea Riga Marathon which is 25% up on last year.
The winner of this year's Nordea Riga Marathon was Slimani Benazzouz (Morocco) in a time of 02:17:33. The women’s race was won by Maryna Damantsevich (Belarus) in a time of 02:38:16. In so doing she shattered the previous women’s record for the Riga Marathon which dated back to 1991 by an amazing 5 minutes and 37 seconds. Since this year’s Nordea Riga Marathon was run over a new course, both results have been recognised as course records.
The top Latvian runner was Mareks Florošeks who completed the marathon in a time of 02:27:00. In the women’s race, the fastest time by a Latvian runner was recorded by Dace Lina who reached the finish with the stopwatch clocking her time as 02:54:30. Both top Latvian marathon runners were awarded two prizes at once – the Riga Mayor’s Cup and Nordea Bank’s Special Prize. Of all the athletes to run the full marathon distance, 57% were runners from overseas. One should note that a lot of Finnish runners opt to run their spring marathon in Riga – this year one fifth of the marathon competitors came from Finland. In the full marathon race, initial results indicate that out of 789 athletes registered to compete - 675 runners reached the finish.
This year, the previous records in both the men’s and women’s categories of the Nordea Riga Half Marathon were also broken. It’s pleasing that the men’s race was won by a Latvian athlete, Valērijs Žolnerovičs who completed the 21 km race in a new record time of 01:05:40 improving the Nordea Riga Half Marathon record by 12 seconds. The women‘s race was won by Kenyan runner, Irene Chepkirui in a time of 01:14:04 which broke the previous record by six minutes. In the half marathon, initial results show that out of 2,189 registered participants, 1,730 runners finished the race.
The mini marathon attracted the biggest number of runners with over 7,800 athletes setting out on the morning of 23 May. The mini marathon podium was exclusively occupied by Latvian athletes. Konstantīns Savčuks covered the 5 kilometre distance fastest in a time of 16 minutes and 21 seconds. In turn, the fastest finisher in the women’s race was Lāsma Grīnberga in a time of 00:18:34.
